No Snow in Idaho's Mountains
Let it snow…let it snow… let it snow. And yes, I know Christmas is over and this ain’t no carole…this is a request…make that a plea for moisture in the mountains. I got an e-mail from the USDA’s Ron Abramovich, the Water Supply Specialist who handles the snow surveys for the State of Idaho. The e-mail said they were going to measure the snow at Mores Creek Summit near Idaho City…that I was invited to go along and that would provide snowshoes. I called Ron up only to find that snowshoes probably (and very sadly) may not be necessary: “So far we’ve got some snow but we need a lot more. Current snowpack percentages across the state range from 45% of average in parts of Southern Idaho to only 80% in the Panhandle region. So we’re hoping to get back in a storm track and we double the amount of snow water we currently have up in the mountains.” Are you saying we’re parched? “Yes…we’ve been getting a little bit here and there but nothing major to brag about. The snowpack in the mountains is barely above half of normal for this time of the year.” So let’s all collectively do whatever’s necessary to bring snow…and that includes the power of prayer.
