New Video Highlights Careers. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

Normally when we talk with Jennifer Witherbee at the Washington Apple Education Foundation it’s about a fundraiser or a new scholarship program but recently WAEF has developed a new tool to highlight career opportunities for students.

WITHERBEE: Since WAEF’s inception 15 years ago we’ve always had an interest in providing industry education and have had a difficult time defining what our role ought to be in that area. The last couple of year the board members have really focused on how can we take advantage of the audience that we already have in front of students to share with them about tree fruit industry careers.

In this fast paced world of text messaging it is hard to get someone’s attention.

WITHERBEE: The challenge is how do we do that in such a way that kids are attracted to the industry and find these careers appealing and actually want to listen to us. So what we came up with is a great 8 minute film that follows 6 young industry professionals in their careers in the tree fruit industry.

The film is being shown to high school age kids in tree fruit growing areas.

WITHERBEE: So we’ll take this 8 minute film and we will be showing it to high school students when we go into the classroom to do scholarship training. It just gives students kind of a little taste of what work might be in the tree fruit industry.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
