Ag Education Classes

Ag Education Classes. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

With harvest time rapidly coming to an end it is time to consider brushing up on some other skills and according to Washington State Farm Bureau’s Dan Fazio, they are offering some classes designed for farmers and ranchers.

FAZIO: We have a new program at Farm Bureau, essential training program. We’re doing training programs just about every week, webinars, in person training. The one I want to highlight for October is called our Excellence in Employee Relations. It’s a labor relations seminar that we’re going to do down in the lower Yakima, in Sunnyside, in Pasco and in Moses Lake on Tuesday the 20th of October and Wednesday the 21st of October.

With some changes on the horizon Fazio says this is a good way to get up to date.

FAZIO: We’re going to talk about how you get more productive workers. The Obama Administration has made an increase in Union membership a priority and there has been an increase in Union organizing activities at farms and food processing plants in the lower Yakima/Tri-Cities area.

He says that farmers have to have a clear understanding of the federal and state laws that impact their ability to communicate with workers.

FAZIO: But more than that they have to figure out what it is that makes Union membership attractive to workers and that is workers that are not being treated fairly, supervisors that are using incorrect management techniques and workers that get disgruntled.
