Food Contest Winner

MMMMM. Doesn’t that sound delicious…a fruit-filled, frozen yogurt treat covered in chocolate and granola. I heard about a University of Idaho senior food science student who led an Idaho - Washington State University student team to first prize in the nation's top food development competition. Kellie Grant of Rathdrum, Idaho, served as captain for the student team's first place finish in the 2009 Danisco Knowledge Award competition.

The team's entry was  designed to be a healthy, dairy-based, frozen novelty providing a source of fiber and healthy probiotics. Probiotics are beneficial microbes, such as bacteria. The competition requires students to use commercial food ingredients, including at least some of those manufactured by Danisco to create a product.

This team described the product as targeted toward adults, especially women, because of their desire for indulgent frozen novelties with portion control. If I ever served my wife something and said “Here Honey, this is an indulgent frozen novelty with portion control” that’s the last desert I’d ever see. Anyway, congratulations to Kelly and her team they won $10,000. (Kellie) “There were 5 people on our team so we split it amongst us and gave 10% back to the club.”

Great gesture from Kelly and the Food Science team at U of I. Incidentally, the Vandal football team should only hope to do as well this year.
