Feds Buy Dairy

Feds Buy Dairy

OK! I’m not shy about expressing an opinion. Here’s a scenario. Dairy farmers have been in Idaho for generations. Good, hardworking people trying to make an honest living through hard work and dedication. Along come tough times. The price of dairy products start sinking like the Titanic and there are no lifeboats. Dairymen are selling product for less than it cost them to produce and are forced to start selling off their cattle for beef production.

On the other hand, these tough times are awfully hard on millions of people who have lost jobs and homes and are just plain hungry. These are our own people. We hear stimulus till we want to throw up. It’s a cliché. But here comes the duh! What if we took some stimulus money, bought dairy products from our own dairy people and fed our hungry people with this nourishing food.

Idaho Reps. Mike Simpson and Walt Minnick are urging the government to do just that. But before I say Duh again, I wanted to check with an industry spokesman so I called Bob Naerbout, Idaho Dairymen’s Association Executive Director: “We have a lot of product available. Some of your cheapest sources of protein to provide people would be through dairy product and so we’re encouraged by both Representative Minnick and Simpson for taking this step.”

Simpson, Minnick, Naerbout. All on the same page. Duh!
