Most planted wheat varieties in Washington; getting variety test results quickly
Washington Ag Today July 15, 2009 The most planted wheat variety in Washington for this year’s harvest was the soft white winter wheat Eltan, which accounted for 21 percent of winter wheat acres. The varietal survey conducted by the Agricultural Statistics Service showed Eltan was followed by the Clearfield ORCF102, which had the largest acreage increase from 2008, then Madsen and a blend of Eltan-Tubbs to round out the top four common white winter wheats.
The top four hard red winter wheats in Washington were Bauermeister, Buchanan, Eddy and Finley, with Bauermeister showing the largest decrease in plantings.
Bruehl was far and away the most planted winter club wheat with Eden the only spring club.
Louise and Alpowa were the number one and two soft white spring wheats with Hank and Westbred 926 the leading hard red springs.
Farmers looking for information from wheat variety testing to help make planting decisions this fall can get results on yield, test weight and protein within just a few days of a plot being harvested. Stephen Guy, who runs Washington State University’ wheat variety testing program, says producers can sign up for a listserve.
Guy: “All they have to do is send me an email or contact me by telephone and I can add their email address to that list and they will start receiving those updates as soon as they are available. My email address is sguy@wsu.edu. My telephone number is 509-335-5831.”
Guy warns you will be getting emails from sixty different experiments by joining that listserve.
