Cowboy Road Show
It is interesting that some items become worth more as they get older. I'm Jeff Keane; I'll be right back talk about the value of age.As the television show, "Antique Road Show" has taught us, some possessions become worth more as they age and are well taken care of. I added that last part about "well taken care of" for my wife's benefit, but even if she takes the hint it would probably be wasted on me. Getting back to items that do increase in value as they age, it is amazing what some cowboy gear is worth if it qualifies as a true classic. It seems most spurs, bits, saddles or accessory tack items are more sought after if they are custom made. Then, if an item is made by one of the master craftsmen it can be even more valuable. Much of the antique cowboy gear that is expensive today was probably fairly costly when it was bought new because it was good quality, long lasting equipment. I just read about a pair of 1904 G. S. Garcia-made spurs that are value at $3,750 and a Garcia saddle that is worth $2,500. Sometimes value is increased because only a few were made. That was the case of a Winchester Model 1873 rifle that sold for $93,000 recently. The firearm sold for $100 in the late 1800's when only 133 were made. So maybe you better check the back corner of the barn and see what is hanging on that rusty nail. There is always the chance an ancestor made the right choice when he or she bought some needed, everyday working gear. I'm Jeff Keane.
