Blueberries Coming Soon

Blueberries Coming Soon. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

The weather has been extremely cooperative lately for fruit growers across the state and according to Alan Schreiber with the Washington Blueberry Commission, this will mean a good harvest.

SCHREIBER: First of all we were quite behind, like up to 2 weeks and in this warm weather our blueberries have caught up. In fact if you are in Eastern Washington the early fruit is just starting to turn blue. We expect harvest to start on the 22nd.

Warm weather across the state has really helped hasten the fruit.

SCHREIBER: If you go to the western part of the state, it’s been warm there. They’ve had some record temperatures. Pollination is pretty much over; berries are starting to size up. Production looks like it’s going to be pretty good, probably above average.

Schreiber says that is because of some increased acreage even though there was a bit of damage over the winter.

SCHREIBER: Looks like berry size is going to be larger than normal. Looks like the yield, both the per acre is going to be up and the number of acres harvested are going to be up. I think it is fair to say that there is an ample supply of blueberries.

Unfortunately prices have not been holding but if you are a fan of blueberries you should have a good crop to choose from.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
