Worker safety and health workshops for Washington potato industry
Farm and Ranch June 5, 2009
The Washington State Potato Commission is investing grant funds from the Department of Labor and Industries in a series of workshops in the Columbia Basin for owners, managers, supervisors and employees of farms, packing sheds and processors.
Karen Bonaudi, Potato Commission assistant executive director, says the free workshops will address training requirements for worker health and safety on farm and in sheds and processing facilities. Bonaudi: “The result of this program will be increased protection for workers in plants, and packing sheds and in the fields, but also less exposure for employers.” The workshop dates are June 8th at the Quincy Fire House for grower operations. June 15th at the Pasco Red Lion, also for grower operations. Workshops for shed and processing operations will be held July 9th at the Pasco Red Lion and July 10th at the Quincy Fire House. Two different workshops will be held on each day with the morning session beginning at 8:30 and the afternoon workshop at 1:30. Advance registration is important. You are asked to register by phoning Brandy Parker at 509-765-8845 with the date you plan to attend, names of those for both morning and afternoon sessions, and how many will need headphones for simultaneous translation into Spanish. That is the Northwest Farm and Ranch Report. Brought to you in part by the Washington State Potato Commission. Nutrition today! Good health tomorrow!
