(Janie Burns) “I’ve always been interested in eating good food, and also growing food that others want to eat. In other words, I want to grow what my customer want.”
Hey there’s a concept…pleasing your customers. And according to Janie Burns, owner of Meadowlark Farm in Nampa, there’s a new era in farming. Well…new to this generation. Janie raises sheep and poultry, in her words…humanely. She loves talking to and getting feedback from her customers and sells everything she produces. Janie says that when it comes to raising crops or livestock to bring to a farmer’s market like the one in Boise that’s open on Saturdays, there’s only one problem. “There aren’t enough farmers. There is not enough product to run more than one day a week. I’ll give you the example, if I’m a farmer and know there’s a market where there’s gonna be 13,000 people, I’m gonna pick all day Friday, probably Thursday night, gonna pick it all, take it to Boise, sell it all, I’ll have nothing. If it’s a fresh produce item, I won’t have anything to sell until the next week. That sucks up all the supply.”
And that’s a great thing. Ag producers out there, if the economy is putting up some roadblocks... there appears to be one freeway that’s wide open and that’s the road from farm to market. Think about taking a little piece of your farm and giving it a try.
