Green Revolution Part 2

Green Revolution Part 2

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. Today we are continuing to discuss how the wine industry is participating in the green revolution and their attempts to create an environmentally kinder industry.
As I mentioned yesterday, the wine industry has been moving towards the practice of environmentally friendly grape growing for years. For decades many segments of the wine industry have been making efforts to leave the world in better shape than it is today. And although rising fuel costs have created a need to examine certain aspects of the industry these conversations were happening long before it became the hot topic it is today. Such conversations as shipping weight, which means wine producers are examining the packaging of wine and specifically the weight of the glass bottle. The recycle-ability of all wine packaging is of concern. Years ago Fetzer winery moved to a soy based ink on their organic wines sold under the Bonterra label, and many others have followed. Why? Because soy based inks are more easily stripped during the de-inking process of paper recycling. Paper labels are also being made from natural products other than tree pulp. Corks are being recycled and considered for innovative flooring applications. This is an amazing and interesting behind the scenes topic that I do not believe many of us are aware of and the wine industry truly deserves credit for their efforts on behalf of their industry and our planet. Join me tomorrow as we continue this topic of the green revolution and its role in the wine industry, and thank you for joining me on today’s Vine to Wine.
