Wines of Texas

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. It seems as though most every state in the union is making wine these days and Texas is no accept ion.  Today we take a peak at the Texas wine industry.

Texas is among the states growing vinifera grapes and making wine that actually has an interesting track record. In the early years things were a bit rough. Trial and error proved that it was necessary to succumb to the hot dry climate by moving away from tradition vinifera grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay in favor of grapes grown in Italy, Spain, Portugal and the Rhone of France. The Texas wine and grape industry is 5th in the United States for wine production. The most successful producers are making wines from grapes like Grenache, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Carignan. The Texans produce over 2 million gallons of wine each year. Their 2,700 acres of vineyard and over 170 wineries contribute to a state economic impact of over 1.35 Billion Dollars. With I think seven or eight American Viticulture Areas there must be some wines worth drinking. Many of the wines are fruit forward and food friendly making them easy to drink. Why not check them out? Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at Vine to Wine dot net and thank you for joining me on today’s
