New Favorite Wine

Welcome to vine to wine this is your host Linda Moran. As most of you know my new favorite wine is usually the wine that is in my glass at the time. Today I want to tell you about my new favorite meatloaf wine.

Yes meatloaf. If I do say so myself; I have a great recipe for Italian meatloaf. I made it recently for a casual Friday night with friends. I served the meatloaf with sautéed spinach and some mashed yams and carrots. It was a simple meal. But the interesting part to me was the wines with the meatloaf. There were many wines open on the table and as we ate and sipped I noticed three of the wines went well, in fact very well with the meatloaf. So I scoped it out and realized the three wines that were making my usual meal so unusual, were all in fact Washington Merlot. I was delighted – as I happen to think Washington state makes some of the best Merlot in the world. The characteristics that seemed to really work with my meatloaf were the genuinely supple fruit the smooth tannins and the nice bright acid. None of the three wines were heavily oaked so that really helped. Now I know meatloaf is casual but in many ways so is Merlot – so maybe they just get along because of that very reason. Come on give it a try. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thanks for joining me on today’s Vine to Wine.
