In a step towards creating financial independence for low income families The Small Farmers Project in Lane County, Oregon is providing community garden spots and instruction in organic farming techniques. Participating families are able to improve their economic situation by learning how to grow and sell organic produce. Started in 1999 by a local non-profit organization the project has grown to the point of needing a waiting list for next year. Teaching people how to provide for themselves is a big key in reducing the number of people going hungry in America. To create an advocacy of such gardens across the nation should become a priority; a true land stewardship through food production. The Small Farmers Project not only provides needy families with the farmland and know how to grow their own food, but also gives them the much needed personal satisfaction of having a hand in their own financial improvement; a needed hand up, not just a hand out.
