1/13/09 Dolcetto

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran and today we are going to explore an Italian wine known as Dolcetto. I was recently asked if I liked Dolcetto. It is a red wine from the Piedmont region of Italy, and my answer is that I do like it. It is one of the three major grapes grown in the region along with Barbera and Nebbiolo. It is said that the Italian growers appreciate it for the fact that it is easily grown in cooler parts of the vineyards, those areas that are not usually suited to vinifera vines. Although the wine is not as big and serious as wine made with Barbera or Nebbiolo it is none the less a bit of a crowd pleaser. It is an approachable red wine with lots of fruity characteristics. The acid level of the wine is also good, making it a food wine that crosses over from course to course with relative ease. I find it even lends itself to being served slightly chilled. It is also fun to serve along with cheeses imported from northern Italy. Why not ask your favorite cheese monger for a recommendation. Now if all of this isn't getting you excited to buy a Dolcetto here is a bit more good news you can buy a very good Dolcetto for under twenty dollars. Look for a Dolcetto the next time you just can't decide. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thank you for joining me on today's Vine to Wine.
