Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. A few weeks ago I did a series of programs about the wine industry and its commitment to the environment with regards to everything from farming methods to packaging designed to be more easily recycled. Comments from friends have encouraged me to define what I meant when I said the wine industry is embracing sustainable forms of agriculture. Today we explore what sustainable means and why it is advantageous for the growing of wine grapes. Sustainable agriculture integrates goals such as environmental health, economic profitability, social and economic equity. From farmers to consumers, there are many advocates of sustainable agriculture. Sustainability, as the word itself implies, addresses the idea that we must meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations. Stewardship of land and natural resources involves maintaining or enhancing this vital resource base for the long term. This is important, because over the years we found that conventional farming was badly depleting the soil. As you know, the soil is paramount in creating great wines. It is fundamental in determining the flavor profile of the grapes and subsequently the wine. Otherwise we wouldn't care so much about specific viticulture areas and their contribution to unique wines. Therefore it is nice to know the wine grape growing industry is not only working for the best interest of the planet but also the best interest of our palates!
