Washington Ag February 28, 2008 Latah, Washington farmer Jeff Tee has been named to the first ever Environmental Protection Agency Agricultural Advisory Committee. Tee, who produces wheat, lentils and bluegrass seed joins 29 other citizens on the Farm, Ranch, and Rural Communities Advisory Committee.
Jon Scholl, counselor to the EPA administrator for agricultural policy explains the role of the advisors.
Scholl: "Agriculture has a big role to play as part of the solution to environmental challenges. We think that sitting down at the same table, as this committee will do, together we can do what is good for agriculture and good for our environment."
Initially EPA will ask the committee to focus on three issues; how EPA's policies and regulations on climate change and renewable energy will affect the agricultural community; an environmental strategy for managing waste from livestock that considers regulatory and voluntary approaches, and development of a constructive approach to advancing sustainable agriculture.
