12/17/07 Top Ten Ranch Horses

They're' tough hardy, quick and catty and while their bloodlines have changed through the years, the importance of a good ranch horse hasn't. I'm Jeff Keane and I will be back in a minute to tell you what some consider being the top ten ranch horse bloodlines. Back in my grandfather's era decedents of Steeldust were prized, today many top ranch horses come from cutting bloodlines. Here's Susan to fill us in: Recently the Western Horseman Magazine featured what they considered to be the top 10 bloodlines that have had the most influence on today's working ranch horse. As Jeff mentioned the cutting industry has infused working horses with cow sense and athleticism. It's no surprise then that Peppy San Badger or Little Peppy, known for his contributions to both reining and cutting topped their list. Arizona was right behind Texas as a producers of quality sires giving us Blue Valentine awarded 7th, Driftwood who came in at 5th, and the infamous Doc Bar at number two, who at 14.3 hands started a cutting dynasty. Sun Frost, Jackie Bee, Playgun, Freckles Playboy, Old Joe Hancock and Two Eyed Jack all made Western Horseman's top ten list as well. You know Susan, it would be fun to poll our listeners because I'll bet many of them ride descendants of these great sires. And Jeff, I'll bet we would both be surprised by the variety of disciplines our audience is using these working horses for. Hey we all know how versatile a good horse is, I'm Jeff Keane.
