Farm and Ranch June 28, 2007 The soft white winter wheat Tubbs 06 was released last fall by Oregon State University. OSU wheat breeder Jim Peterson says this is an improvement over the original Tubbs cultivar with some additional tolerance and resistance to stripe rust.
Peterson: "There will be some registered and some certified seed available this fall. We had a very large sale of foundation seed last fall so I expect some pretty good seed stocks available. Our performance of Tubbs and Tubbs 06 last fall. They were almost dead even. Without any stripe rust pressure the yields were very similar. Half an inch taller. Half a day later in maturity maybe, but really just about dead on in performance and hopeful that additional stripe rust resistance will be of benefit. It is not immune but we certainly wanted to get the low end of susceptibility out of the variety."
The original Tubbs was the number two variety raised in Oregon last year accounting for just over 14 percent of the state's wheat acres. In Washington in 2006 Tubbs was ranked the number four soft white winter wheat. In Idaho in 2006 Tubbs was the sixth most popular wheat variety overall raise primarily in northern Idaho.
Idaho and Washington don't give Tubbs the best end use quality rating. Washington ranks it as a variety that does not enhance the quality of PNW wheat. Idaho says it erodes the overall quality or consistency of the state's wheat.
