In 1941, the American Quarter Horse Association needed a standard for their brand new breed, a special horse that would forever set the bar. I'm Jeff Keane and I will be right back. The horse that became the first registration in the new AQHA breed, was near perfect&. That is except for his name& Here's Becky with more on the horse that became AQHA's P-1. Well Jeff, it all started when the directors of the new American Quarter Horse Association created a numbering system to register the breed. Horses given the numbers two though nineteen were carefully selected to become foundation stallions forever recorded in the stud book, but was it was decided that the coveted number one horse.. the very first horse to become a "Registered Quarter Horse" would be the animal awarded Grand Champion at the 1941 Fort Worth Exposition. Oh, the competition was tough, and when it was all said and done a relatively unknown four-year-old powerhouse standing 15.1 hands and built like a brick house was awarded P-1. Bred and raised in Texas on the famous King ranch, P1 would return home to sire nearly 200 foals. Now the Kings were a bit "stingy" with P1's progeny, only selling a few to the general public. These select few were more than enough to create the buzz that has continued the legacy of P1, but Jeff I think you may know him better as Wimpy. Wimpy that just doesn't seem a fit name for such a famous horse. It just goes to show you can't believe the old saying 'Its all in a name". I'm Jeff Keane.
