05/02/07 Italian White Wine

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. We rarely seek out are Italian white wine. It seems that most of us think red when we think Italian. Today we are going to talk about one of my favorite Italian whites Verdicchio. On a trip to Italy I was able to spend a portion of my time in a region to which I had never traveled. It was the Marches, spelled M-A-R-C-H-E-S, on the central eastern coast of Italy. The region is home to Verdicchio, a grape that produces wines that up until now, I must admit I had not consumed with any great enthusiasm. Verdicchio as I knew it was a dry rather insipid white wine. However, I have changed my mind after visiting and drinking wine in the Marches. The Marches is a beautiful area and is not heavily touristed. Once you get out to the country, this quite hilly primarily agricultural region, has a very peaceful feeling. And as I said, the region is the home of the white wine from the grape Verdicchio, made somewhat famous by the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi. All of the Verdicchio that I had in Italy was far better than any that I have ever had here in the states. Until now - The wines from Jesi spelled JESI in fact Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is now widely available and it is one Italian white wine worth searching out and enjoying .
