A goat of a companion, I'm Jeff Keane and I'll be back with more on the charge of a horse that roomed with Ellsworth the goat. After the production of the movie Seabiscut, a horse having a goat for a stall buddy may not seem as strange. But in their day this duo created a lot of talk. Here's Becky to fill you in.
This was not your average goat, or horse. The goat was a large African breed with a rather cantankerous personality, which seemed to blend perfectly with his equine sidekick. Foaled in 1941 this 16hand thoroughbred went by the name of Depth Charge. As a two year old, it was found that he could not compete at the traditional distance of his ancestors but excelled racing at quarter horse lengths. This adversity would find this running horse well traveled and in his nationwide treks he stumbled into a life long friendship in form of Ellsworth the goat.
You know I've has some friends well I won't go into that.
I'm sure you have Jeff, but for this hot blooded horse a grumpy goat proved to be the ideal counterpart. He produced energetic offspring described simply as "fast". He later brought his good bone and smooth muscling to the performance ring. And, though he entered the world alone, Ellsworth would be at his side in 1965 at the time of his death. The fiery goat now with out his equine comrade Depth Charge lost his zest for life and past shortly after.
Really good friendships seem to last a life time, that's why they are worth so much. I'm Jeff Keane
