04/13/07 Cover up

The Cover Up It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt. I'm Jeff Keane; I'll be right back to tell you why that statement is true. It seems when you are young some of the really fun activities are even more fun if there is just a hint of adverse consequence involved. But young minds just aren't cluttered with consequences, warnings, or details. Most ranch kids are pretty good at rigging up some kind of apparatus to practice horse or bull riding. Well, the saddle cousins Steve and Lucky and brother, Dane hung on four ropes in the cow barn was so good and down right wicked they were told by our uncle not to ride it anymore. Right! As the boys passed through the cow barn on some important "project" the siren's song of that saddle just hanging quietly on those four ropes was just too much and forbidden a ridding contest was under way. The three were all top riders, but Lucky just couldn't be thrown. Steve and Dane nodded to one another grabbed the ropes and the ride was on. Lucky wasn't so lucky; the saddle flipped and Lucky was thrown to the ground unhurt, just knocked unconscious a little. Not a real problem in young minds, except Uncle Tom was almost at the barn for milking time. Nothing to do but plan a cover-up. Lucky was scooted into the corner behind some hay. The story was he went to the house. Good plan except the saddle was still swinging and Lucky came stumbling and groaning out of the corner covered in hay. The best defense lawyer in the nation wouldn't have helped the boys that day. They were punished to the fullest extend of parental law and the saddle came down. I'm Jeff Keane.
