Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. Yesterday we discussed the grape variety Cabernet Sauvignon. The parents of Cabernet Sauvignon are Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. Today we are going to learn about one of those parents Cabernet Franc.
Cabernet Franc is a red grape varietal that joined Sauvignon Blanc in parenting the Grape Cabernet Sauvignon. It is one of the five major grape varieties comprising the blends of French Bordeaux. And France has the most plantings of Cabernet Franc than any other wine region. Cabernet Franc differs from Cabernet Sauvignon in that it does not have as thick a skin resulting in lighter color and less tannin. Additionally, it has less acid and tends to ripen earlier. The aromas are of plum, and raspberry as well as cherry and violet. Most often, it is used in part of a blend, such as in the case of French Bordeaux and Meritage wines. However, we are seeing it occasionally as a stand alone or as the major component of a blend more often especially here in Washington state. Do some research and ask your local wine merchant for some recommendations of wines with Cabernet Franc as a dominant element in the wine and try something new.
It never hurts to try something new. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thank you for joining me on today's Vine to Wine.
