11/02/06 National Xmas tree cut in Wash state

Washington Ag November 2, 2006 The National Christmas tree was cut yesterday in Washington's Olympic National Forest. Joe Walsh of the U.S. Forest Service says the selection of the 65 foot silver fir was made earlier this year. Walsh: "In early summer the architect of the Capitol selected the tree and the different the forests take turns and vie for the privilege of supplying the National Christmas Tree that will then be at the Capitol Building." The tree will be trucked across country during November reaching Washington D.C. in time for the December 6th lighting ceremony in front of the Capitol building. The tree will be decorated with 10-thousand lights and an additional three-thousand ornaments made by school students in Washington state. Sixty-five smaller trees will make the trip to the nation's Capitol as gifts from Washington state to various congressional and government office buildings. Eight Washington residents were inducted into the Washington State 4-H Hall of Fame at the recent 4-H Forum held in Chelan. They were recognized for their commitment and impact on 4-H and their communities; and leadership to 4-H over many years.
