Autonomous Tractors Roll Into Sugarcane
Autonomous tractors aren't just a glimpse of the future anymore. They're now working commercially in one of the Southeast's signature crops.Florida-based U.S. Sugar has announced what it says is the largest commercial deployment of autonomous tractors in the American sugar industry, putting five unmanned John Deere tractors to work across its South Florida sugarcane operation. The tractors can operate around the clock while being monitored remotely, allowing one operator to oversee multiple machines from a central command station.
According to the company, the technology completed an 18-month research and development phase before moving into commercial use. U.S. Sugar says the autonomous fleet is expected to improve land preparation accuracy, increase productivity, enhance sustainability and provide more consistent field operations.
U.S. Sugar says the technology isn't replacing people. Instead, employees are learning new skills to operate and oversee the autonomous tractors, with plans to eventually bring the technology to sweet corn and green bean operations.
