An upcoming event in California is taking an interesting approach to the latest in the citrus industry: what can we learn from Florida?

I recently spoke with Casey Creamer, President and CEO of California Citrus Mutual about their March 12 Citrus Showcase…

“During our morning program is Dr. Dr. Marisa Zansler. She’s an economist with the Florida Department of Citrus.”

Her presentation will include a status update of what is happening in Florida as it pertains to citrus greening…

“Florida is predominately a juice state, there is a little bit of fresh market stuff. And, in California, we’re predominately fresh-oriented with juice being a byproduct. Really, that’s sort of the rationale to having her coming out form Florida, being the expert, being a nonbiased participant that can really raise the level of awareness when it comes to the juice market and how we can make that work in California."

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Florida farmers produced nearly 300 million boxes of citrus in 2004. By 2024, harvests yielded about 20 million boxes. The forecast for 2025 is 14.1 million boxes, according to the USDA.
