Federal and state dignitaries are expected to be on hand today for the dedication of the new Advanced Genetics Laboratory at the USDA Research facility in Aberdeen. Research leader Michael Bonman says the new 12 thousand square foot building will enable the USDA Ag Research Service and the University of Idaho to expand work on molecular genetics while using some of today's cutting edge technology.
BONMAN "And apply those to our breeding effort basically to improve potatoes and small grains. And furthermore to try to produce specialty grains that might be useful as an ingredient in trout feeds."
The genetics laboratory construction was completed on time in April and didn't exceed the five million dollar budget.
BONMAN "A molecular geneticist is working on potatoes next to a molecular guy working on barley and oats and we're having some exchange and sharing ideas even though we're working on different crops."
These researchers develop superior new potatoes for fresh-market sale or for processing into frozen potato products, as well as new and improved grain-bearing plants such as wheat, oats and barley.
