Narrowing down on some of the issues going on regarding the 2023 farm bill is that of nutrition assistance, former USDA Secretary of Agriculture and former Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns was the guest speaker at a recent Colorado Livestock Association webinar on what to expect in the next farm bill.

“$1,223,000,000,000 or 84% is for nutrition, by and large, that's the SNAP program. The old food stamp program, conservation is about 60 billion commodity titles, about 69 billion, all others about 19 and a half billion. So you can see where the spending takes place in this farm bill and what's going to be the target for folks like the Freedom Caucus, and they're going to work want to cut that spending there.

However, Johann says that Congressman David Scott, Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Committee, and Senator John Boozman, the ranking member of the Senate, agriculture, nutrition and forestry committee, are standing their ground and saying they will not support cuts to the nutrition program. Johanns points out this will be the first trillion-dollar farm bill at $1,463,000,000,000. According to the Congressional Budget Office, he notes that while this is a five-year bill, the Congressional Budget Office always scores bills for 10 years out
