The American Sugar Alliance is wrapping up the marketing year for last year's crop and beginning the new year's crop. Dr Robert Johannson, Director of Economics and Policy Analysis at the American Sugar Alliance, has insights into the forecast for 2024.

“One of our activities that we spend time at is keeping track of where USDA is forecasting the upcoming crop, and that's important for all of our farmers and our businesses to know how to plan for the upcoming marketing season. So this year we're looking at crop here we're sitting on about a 9.2 million ton domestic crop of sugar, that sugar cane and sugar beets. We are importing fair amount of sugar from about 70 different countries. As I probably pointed out before, the US is the number five sugar producer in the world and the number three sugar importer in the world. So both of those things are important for us to keep track of looking ahead.”

Dr, Johannson has a positive outlook for the upcoming sugar crop.

“This coming year, with the new crop in the ground for the beets, USDA forecasts a record crop of 9.3 million tons, but the crops looking good, and we're looking at a record crop if all goes well for the rest of the year.”
