American Farm Bureau Federation, Senior Director of Government Affairs, Dave Samuelson says that the Office of the US Trade Representative has established a dispute settlement panel to address Mexico and the refusal to import us biotech corn under the US -Mexico-Canada free trade agreement.

"They have gone through all the processes of having formal technical consultations, formal dispute consultations, seeing if both sides could come to an agreement, most of which would have been from the US side saying they wanted Mexico to remove their decrees that would restrict imports by Mexico of US corn. Mexico has not chosen to do that. Do that. So now you go on following the procedures in the US -Mexico-Canada agreement to a formal dispute panel."

Each side will offer expert commentary on the panel.

"And over time, of course, there will be a brief submitted, a formal hearing, and they'll go through that process of determining whether the decrees by Mexico live up to and follow the agreements under the US-Mexico-Canada agreement, and we can probably expect a decision from the panel early in 2024."
