Unique Agriculture Curriculum In Schools

The United Sorghum Checkoff Program is bringing agriculture education to classrooms across the country through their newly launched Farm to School curriculum initiative. Lanier Dabruzzi, is the director of food innovations and institutional markets for the sorghum checkoff says that the curriculum was developed after sorghum was added to the USDA is Food Buying Guide, a resource that helps school food service professionals choose foods that meet the nutritional requirements for school menus.

“So this curriculum is going to help educate them about sorghum. And the great thing about the curriculum is it helps teachers in many many subjects so they can use it in everything from stem or language arts or geography. It really is seamless the way that it can fit into their education of the students and our communications team has done a great job and develop interactive tools”

Dabruzzi, says the curriculum covers a wide variety of topics such as the history of sorghum, its nutritional value, the geography of where sorghum has grown, and much more in addition to the creation of a food service guide

“So for those folks in the kitchen, it educates them about how to cook it tips and tricks about that recipes crediting through the USDA program, and so they can do this in tandem “

So far o Bruce Lee says the program has been a success as it has allowed many school food service professionals to meet the whole grain requirements for school meals.
