Potatoes Favorite Vegetable Pt1

From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. Northwest potato growers have something to be very proud of. That is that the “fruits of their labor” are the most popular vegetable in the nation!

Potatoes USA Chief Marketing Officer, Kim Brashears says, it’s why everyone in the potato industry loves what they do …

BRASHEARS … “People love potatoes. Potatoes are America’s favorite vegetable. We know that because we do a survey every year where we ask consumers, of the top 20 most sold vegetables, what are your favorites? And for the last six years, potatoes have been on the top of that list.”

But the second favorite vegetable, broccoli? No offense to the broccoli growers, but really? …

BRASHEARS … “In our tracking, broccoli used to be America’s favorite vegetable. However, six years ago the data switched where potatoes have risen to that top and the gap is growing.”

Brashears says many wonder why potatoes weren’t always the favorite …

BRASHEARS … “I will say, we did start asking about the top 20 vegetables more consistently in the last seven-eight years in the long-term longitudinal tracking study. So, at the time it wasn’t. Potatoes weren’t necessarily ranked as America’s favorite vegetable. Broccoli was the number one, but potatoes have surpassed that over the last six years in our tracking studies.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on America’s favorite vegetable for the past six years and why potatoes should maintain that spot for the foreseeable future.
