February is American Heart Month and the California Walnut industry is promoting it. Jennifer Olmstead is Marketing Director for Domestic Public Relations for the California Walnut board and commission.

She said they're promoting walnuts in more than 10,000 retail stores across the U.S. for February American Heart Month, because walnuts are heart healthy, even carrying the American Heart Association’s check mark

“We are working with each retailer to have an off-shelf display of California walnuts along with some sort of heart-healthy message. So there has to be that call to action to tie walnuts to American Heart month.

We asked Olmstead to tell us more about that off-shelf display. “Yeah, so oftentimes that means a display shipper, but it means a display of walnuts just outside of their normal shelf positioning so that we are really stopping shoppers when they're in the store and grabbing their attention,” she said. “But then we also work with each retailer and their custom tools to come up with a program that works for them.”

Olmsted said they're not just promoting in the retail stores. “And then to give this campaign additional support we layer in spot television, local radio. And in some instances, we even have outdoor billboard,” noted Olmstead.

Yes, February is American Heart Month and the California Walnut industry wants you to snack on more walnuts, maybe even during the Super Bowl. They are among the best heart-healthy snacks you can eat.
