03/06/06 Monday question - What is Rose`?

Welcome to Vine to Wine I'm your host Linda Moran and on today's program we are answering questions from our email bag. Recently a couple wrote in to ask that I settle a debate for them & "Is Rose a red wine, a white wine, or a blending of the two?" Well, traditionally, a rose is a wine made from red grapes. You see, the meat of most red grapes holds white juice, and it is the skins that have the pigment , or the color. If the grapes are handled gently and the skins are not broken too badly then not much color will be imparted to the juice. Or, if more color is desired, then perhaps the grapes are left on their skins for a longer period of time and more of the pigment is allowed to color the juice. It sounds as though the Rose that you are referring to is most likely a red wine. Another listener writes to ask "what is the best wine to serve with my fresh bass this fishing season"? Speaking of Rose that wouldn't be a bad choice for your bass but of course it depends on how you cook it. Grilled over a campfire then I suggest Cabernet Franc, stuffed and bake then I suggest your favorite Chardonnay. But kudos to you for catching something! I say drink what you like with it. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thanks for joining me on todays Vine to Wine.
