Brant Hunting

In North America, two subspecies of brant are recognized, mostly due to differences in plumage characteristics. Atlantic or Pacific (black) brant are separated into subpopulations inhabiting distinct ranges and having genetic variation. Brant are small, dark geese that have large wings, which give them their characteristic strong flight. Old friend of the show, Ed Bangs, told me about a brant hunt. “I went hunting brant in Mexico, Pacific brant in the Sea of Cortez. They are about the size of a big Mallard, a small sea goose. They summer in Alaska and winter in the Sea of Cortez. A friend and I went down there to hunt ducks. We got whistling ducks and a Mexican duck and all of that kind of thing and then we hunted brant. Had a great shoot and a lot of fun. So you went to Mexico because you wanted to hunt brant or you wanted to drink cervesa? I wanted to hunt brant. It’s a little bit bigger than a mallard duck, dark bill little white band around their neck, they decoy real well, come in in big flocks and they are strong fliers.
