Farmer's Market Flowers Pt 2
I'm Bob Larson. The fruits of her labor are the beautiful flower bouquets she sells at Seattle-area farmer's markets all summer long. 17-year old Chong Vang immigrated to the U.S. in 2004 and soon found herself an integral part of a new family business. After seeing the size of her beautiful display at the Mill Creek Farmer's Market recently, I assumed they must contract out for the flowers ...
CHONG VANG ... "Me: I was asking how you keep yourself stocked in flowers all year, but you guys grow your own flowers? Chong: Yes, we do! Me: You have a farm? Chong: Yes, in Snohomish. Me: And how big of a farm is it? Chong: Just our part, I think it's just three acres. Me: Three acres? Chong: Yeah.
And those 3 acres leaves her with plenty of work to do ...
CHONG VANG ... "Me: So, who's then running the business? Chong: My mom and I, and my grandpa, just the three of us."
And on top of her work-load, Chong is preparing college applications with her sights set on healthcare ...
CHONG VANG ... "I want to do something in the medical field because my grandma, she's been doing dialysis for two years. And, I would go watch her because she does dialysis for three hours and because she doesn't speak English, at all, so I'll go watch her. And the nurses there, I get to know them and they tell me about their job and how their daily routine is, so I thought about maybe being a dialysis nurse. I thought that was really interesting or ... Me: and you like science? Chong: Yes, I like science."
Even if this impressive young woman ends up cultivating a long career in the medical field, my guess is she'll continue working hard to put a smile on the faces of the people she serves.
