11/04/05 Doughnut Wines

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is you host Linda Moran and on today's program we answer the burning question What do doughnuts and wine have in common? Recently I offended an amateur wine maker by telling him that he his recent wine was much better than the previous vintage. Obviously I meant it as a compliment but of course his first question was "What was the matter with the last one?" I replied it was pretty much a doughnut wine. This was obviously a new term to him. Although I don't know how widely accepted the term "doughnut" is I think it was a perfect analogy for his wine. When a wine is referred to as a doughnut wine it simply means that it has no middle or no discernable flavor in the mid-palate it just drops off momentarily. The fruit or sweet fruit comes on strong up front and then right about midway through the taste there is nothing- and then there is the finish and aftertaste. So it is like a doughnut the wine has a whole in it. Whereas the doughnut is supposed to be missing its center, it is not a positive quality in a wine. It leaves the wine tasting incomplete and boring even though it may not have any other discernable faults. So there you have it that is what some wines and doughnuts have in common and no I don't know what wine goes best with a doughnut but when all else fails perhaps a nice brunch style Mimosa. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thanks for joining me on today's Vine to Wine.
