Where are The Steelhead?
A lot of anglers are asking the same question. Where are the Steelhead? Here's steelhead enthusiast Josh Mills with his insight.Josh "I think they ran into really bad migration deficient in the winter of 2014 and 2015, the snow pack was so bad. Then you get into a situation where when the water temperature is higher than normal, they got out to the north pacific in worse condition and the food level was a little messed up and they ran into the "blob" the north pacific warm spot. I think we're at a quarter or 30 % of the normal "A runs" that come through, I think in the Snake River basin and this is my guess, but I think we're down like 30-40 k fish. I ended up with numbers in a couple of weeks, I think in Bonneville the numbers are close to 200,000... normal year is 300,000 in that range. In Lower Granite I think there's somewhere in 130,000 to 140,000 fish maybe a little more maybe a little less. In 2009 there were 313,000 over Bonneville and Lower Granite there were double. So this year right now they're close to 100,000 fish, so I think we're missing 30-40- 50 k fish, but the normal bulk of the run is just missing, it's just not there."
Tomorrow, we'll have part 2 to on where to find the existing Steelhead in our rivers.
