House Republicans' plan to reform the tax code would make significant changes for businesses and lower tax rates. American Farm Bureau Federation tax specialist Pat Wolff calls the plan a bold new approach that would benefit farmers. "The immediate deduction of all business inputs, so that would be equipment, buildings and animals is something that farmers have asked for a long time and it is a very positive part of this plan."

Farmers face many uncertainties, including hard-to-predict weather and market changes. However, Wolff says this plan would eliminate uncertainty in the tax code. "This proposal is an encompassing, long-term permanent change to the tax code. Farmers would know for sure how certain business decisions will impact their bottom line

She says releasing the plan this month is a sign of what's to come if Republicans remain in power in the U.S. House next year.

Meanwhile, it appears that there is a brewing war between civilians and law enforcement. Snipers opened fire on police officers in Dallas, killing at least five and injuring others during protests over two recent fatal police shootings of black men, police said. Also a man pulled a gun near hundreds of people taking part in a Don't Shoot PDX protest Thursday evening and was later taken into custody. Protesters converged on downtown Portland last week in response to deadly police shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota.
