April's Cattle on Feed Report

Last week’s USDA Cattle on Feed Report had a bit of surprise with placement of cattle on feed increased by 7 percent compared to a year ago. USDA Shayle Shagam gives a national update from the report.
Shagam: “The number of cattle on feed on May first in U.S. feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or greater was just under 1.8 million head, which was about 1 percent above a year ago. During April feedlots placed about 1.7 million head, which was 7 percent above a year earlier. During April feedlots marketed about 1.7 million head which was 1 percent above a year ago.”
In Idaho, the number of cattle on feed was 240,000 head, which was the same as the previous month, but up 2 percent from a year ago. An estimated 24,000 which was down 35 percent from the previous month as well as 20 percent lower than a year ago.
In Washington, the number of cattle on feed was down from a year ago by 15 percent at 195,000 head which was the same as the previous month. An estimated 34,000 head were placed on feed down 11 percent from the previous month and 19 percent lower than a year ago.
In Colorado, the number of cattle on feed in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or greater remained the same from both a month ago and the year previous at 900,000 head. An estimated 145,000 cattle and calves were placed on feed during April, 12 precent below the previous month’s placements but consistent with a year ago.
