No Compromise for Puget Sound Salmon Fishing
Our commercial salmon fishing industry will be impacted by the announcement from the State Department of Fish and Wildlife that non-tribal commercial fisheries along with recreational salmon fishing could be closed through much of the season in the Puget Sound. This the first time the state and tribes have not reached an agreement on salmon fishing seasons of which they co- manage in over 30 years. Puget Sound marine and freshwater areas that currently open to salmon fishing – including marine areas 5, 11, 12 and 13 – will close to fishing May 1,On a lighter note aginfo reporter KayDee Gilkey just returned from the Spokane Jr. Show and Farm Fair, her first time as a 4-h mom:
Gilkey: Well, this was my maiden voyage as a 4-H mom at a junior livestock show. I witnessed all of the hard work and dedication of the participating 4-H and FFA youth. It is amazing to watch the skill, maturity, and sportsmanship of these young people. To think about the many, many hours of practicing with their animals, the feeding and nurturing of their livestock — last week's show brought all of that to a pinnacle with the market and showmanship contests. They were up early every morning — prioritizing their animals well being — doing their best in the ring — and even having fun with their fellow competitors — the four-day event left those participating exhilarated and-and maybe a little exhausted — or perhaps that was just the parents. My son had a pig, and he did well and learned a lot more than either of us anticipated. I would highly recommend the experience to any youth or parent that is considering purchasing an animal for a future fair or livestock show. The life skills and memories are something that is really unique to the show ring.
