National Park Week & BLM Plan

National Park Week & BLM Plan. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

The President has signed a proclamation designating this week, National Park Week. During the week you can visit any other national parks for free and there will be other special events happening at various parks around the country. In addition, Friday is Earth Day and many parks will be offing visitors the opportunity of volunteering to help plant trees and more. As part of the proclamation, the President said, "Exposure to the outdoors can stimulate thought and inspiration. Our parks are beloved parts of America, and ensuring their survival for generations to come is imperative "

A new proposal for managing forestlands in Oregon has been released. Sarah Levy, Public Affairs Officer with the Bureau of Land Management explains.

LEVY: In the proposed plan the BLM is proposing to offer more timber for sale that would support local communities and we are also proposing to offer more protections for the Northern Spotted Owl, listed fish and water. In addition to that we would be increasing recreation opportunities. We will be protecting older forests and we would also be increasing net carbon storage and opportunities to implement climate change adaptive strategies.

The official plan was released on Friday as well as appearing in the Federal Register which kicked off a 30-day protest period.
