Latest Dairy Prices & Hemp Bill Moving Ahead

Latest Dairy Prices & Hemp Bill Moving Ahead. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

As we mentioned earlier in the week, Oregon is taking applications for hemp production while Washington State is still struggling with getting a bill passed. The bill, SB 6206 cleared the House on a unanimous vote Tuesday after passing the Senate last month and is now headed for Governor Inslee's desk. The bill would allow licensed growers to produce industrial hemp in WA as part of a research program with WSU studying if widespread hemp production in the state is feasible and if there is a market for it.

Dairy producers should expect to see increased milk per cow numbers this year, which will increase production and impact milk prices. USDA dairy analyst, Amanda Steeneck

STEENECK: The decrease we're seeing in number of cows is very small and we're also expecting yield per cow to grow in 2016 by about 2% which is up from our 0.6% that we saw this past year in year-over-year growth.

Last years all milk price was $17 cwt with increased production. How about this year's all milk price?

STEENECK: We're expecting a decrease from 2015 to $15.30 to $16 cwt.

Class 3 and 4 milk prices are also expected to be lower.

That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
