Apples For Valentine's
Apples For Valentine's. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.A reminder for you guys out there, Valentine's Day is just a little more than a week away and while we normally gravitate to those extra large boxes of chocolates Amanda Schlesner, spokesperson for USApple says there may be a better idea.
SCHLESNER: Overall, apples are really great for you, they're super healthy. They're a super food that's packed with lots of antioxidants and nutrients and we especially think they're great for Valentine's Day because they're heart healthy and February is not only the month of love with Valentine's Day in there but it's also American Heart Month?
A great deal of research has been done regarding the nutritional aspects of apples including studies from Oxford University, University of Florida and a recent study from Ohio State.
SCHLESNER: There are a coupe of studies that have found that eating at least an apple a day is really great for your cholesterol levels. It actually lowers the levels of oxidized LDL which is the bad cholesterol which people don't want to have by about 40%.
Studies show people who eat apples or apple products regularly are more likely to have lower blood pressure and trimmer waistlines.
SCHLESNER: You can always present them with apples and there are plenty of ways to incorporate apples into a fun dinner or dessert or something that's special for your Valentine.
That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
