Environmental permits for a new natural gas storage facility in central Nova Scotia should be issued soon said the president of Nova Scotia's Heritage Gas Ltd. Chris Smith said an environmental consultation process involving Alton Natural Gas Storage LP is making good progress. Now isn't that great news... But wait... Whoops. The plant is going to be built on the Shubenacadie River

which is a river in Nova Scotia, Canada. It has a meandering length of approximately 72 km[2] In 2009, the Shubenacadie was named one of the top five whitewater rivers in Canada. It is also a popular surfing spot for experienced Sea Kayakers. Last but not least, the Shubenacadie is a spawning ground for striped bass. And that is where the problem comes in. The project has been on hold since late last year when native protesters complained that Alton had failed to consult with the local native community. Natives have said they are concerned about the potential impact on the nearby Shubenacadie. Ironically, in order to give natives cheaper rates on their natural gas, the corporation wants to use the river in a way that could possibly in danger the striped bass in their spawning grounds. An episode from the World of Fishing Journal spells out the problem. "Oil and water mix when industry and conservation collide on the banks of the Shubenacadie River. The storage facility is going to be very close to the last spawning grounds for striped bass."
