Cherry Institute

Cherry Institute

Cherry Institute. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

The 73rd Annual Cherry Institute is planned for next Friday, January 15, at the Yakima Convention Center. BJ Thurlby with NW Cherries fills us in.

THURLBY: The fun thing about the cherry industry is we're truly a northwest industry and here in Washington we're producing 80 to 85% of the cherries on any given year. We have growers that will come into Yakima next Friday, on January 15th from Montana, they'll come in from Idaho, even some guys coming in from Utah. Plenty of growers come up from Oregon and growers from all over the state of Washington arrive so it's kind of an exciting event.

Thurby says attendance is normally around 600.

THURLBY: We've got a full blown trade show there and every cherry related support industry is usually available and there to talk and share information, so we've got a good trade show this year and as always we've got what we think is an agenda that's highly relevant to where the growers are today. We've got some interesting talks.

One of those talks is on the WSU breeding program and Thurlby says the lunchtime speaker will be a comedian.

THURLBY: We've gone off the reservation a bit but it's something the growers have put into their post event notes last year to say why don't we reach out and maybe try to put a little humor into the lunch talk. We've brought in a guy named John Keister who's a well known humorist in the Seattle area, had his own television show for years called "Almost Live."

Pre-registration is closed but you can register at the door.
