An old-fashioned American farm. One of my favorite things to do as a kid was go to the movies and watch Westerns. So often, you would see a farmer out on his land with a little log house in the background, dragging a plow behind the horse and tilling the soil. His beloved wife would be either by his side or in the house tending the babies, cleaning and cooking. Well, we have a modern version of that old story. T.J. Cook Farms in Eastern Idaho started eight years ago in much the same way as farms did a century ago. Owners, Todd and Jennifer Cook say they are living the American dream. “My name is Todd Cook and this is my wife Jennifer and our oldest, Ashley, the next one, Emma, this is my favorite son Ruker and our youngest little girl named Faith. We farm and ranch northwest of Blackfoot, about 18 miles northwest and we farm alfalfa and Timothy mostly and then occasionally corn and wheat and barley and then we run a few Angus cows mixed with a few black ones and we are just enjoying the farm life.” T.J. Cook Farms Is really something made from nothing. From sagebrush and rock to irrigated farm ground. “Each year we break out a little more. This last year we have just established a little bit of pasture and we are irrigating now trying to get started. The year before we broke out about 25 acres. It was just raw sagebrush ground. Something no one else wanted and we broke it out. Just mowed it and dished it about 100 times and turned it into farm ground. The year before that we broke out another pivot of ground and put alfalfa on it.
