Rancher Killed & Multi-State Specialty Crop Grant

Rancher Killed & Multi-State Specialty Crop Grant. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

An Idaho rancher was shot and killed during an altercation with police over an injured bull over the weekend. David Sparks has more.

SPARKS: The bull was struck by a passenger car and as emergency crews worked to remove to occupants the bull became agitated and aggressive towards the workers. As police were about to put the bull down, the owner showed up and got into an altercation with police. The rancher had a rifle and at some point both rancher and police drew weapons and fired killing the 62-year old rancher.. The matter is under investigation.

Thanks David. Chipotle now believes that tainted produce is the source of the E. coli bacteria that sickened a number of customers and caused the temporary closure of 43 stores in Oregon and Washington. Eight people have been hospitalized but no deaths have been reported.

And finally, Washington State will be participating in the Specialty Crop Multi-state Grant Program. Unlike other programs like the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program recently announced the individual states must decide to participate in this program and those states then will share a portion of an as yet to be determined amount of money. The deadline for states to submit applications to USDA is January 14. More on this program as USDA and Washington State iron out the details.

That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
