You may remember that yesterday we left off with Rachel Allen, who was looking for her first trophy mule deer buck, taking a broadside shot at about 320 yards. After she shot, the buck didn't move and we pick up the action from their. "So I should again and I knew I hit him that time and he reacted, front shoulder which is ideal, your kill zone is what you want. He started trotting off, not in a hurry across the hillside. So we started booking it and of course he headed over this very steep, you're going to have to run hard to catch him, stuff. We are booking, I'm with my husband Austin who was guiding, he doesn't have a tag, and my husband's uncle who has a tag as well. We are all in pursuit of this buck. So we are crossing this thick stuff which, my husband incidentally shot a bear in last year, so it's scary. Austin is going to go low, I'm going to be in the middle and my uncle is going high. I was almost certain he was dead. As we are going through the brush, I look up and I see a cub bear come out of this area we are about to cross. I'm sorry but the only thing worse than seeing an actual bear is seeing a cub when you don't know where the sow is. so Austin, not having a gun, okay this is scary, so he and I went through the brush together. We got to the top of a knoll and he jumps up probably 70 yards from where we are. I got down on my knee and shot. He instantly pumps up and I can tell it was a great shot but those old bucks can be tough to kill. David, I don't know whether it was because I first saw him at 330 yards but when I walked up to him I could not believe how nice of a buck he was. I could not have been more excited.
